The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2018 Man & Woman of the Year Campaign
What: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Man & Woman of the Year campaign engages influential, compassionate community leaders to help find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients, and improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Through this annual national ten-week campaign, individuals and their teams can have a maximum impact in the fight to end blood cancers. To date, these dedicated leaders have helped LLS invest more than $1 billion in research to advance breakthrough therapies that are saving lives today.
Candidates across the country compete in honor of a local boy or girl who is a blood cancer survivor to raise the most funds for blood cancer research. The male and female candidates who raise the most funds during the campaign will be awarded the title of the campaign’s Man of the Year and Woman of the Year, respectively. Candidates and their campaign teams are judged on their success in raising money, each dollar counting as one vote. Their totals are then considered for the national title. In its 25th year 900 candidates participated and raised $32.5 million; the 2015 Man of the Year raised $302,045.31 and Woman of the Year raised $469,158.91, respectively.
Why: LLS exists to find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients. Today, LLS is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to finding cures for leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other blood cancers. Thanks to research, survival rates for patients with many blood cancers have doubled, tripled and even quadrupled since the early 1960s. Despite these advances, about one third of patients with a blood cancer still do not survive even five years after their diagnosis, which is why more funding is needed to bring better therapies to patients faster.
How: The Man & Woman of the Year campaign begins with a local kickoff event. At the kickoff, candidates and their fundraising campaign teams learn more about LLS’s mission, get to know their fellow candidates and meet the local Boy of the Year and Girl of the Year. The kickoff also provides an opportunity for previous participants to share success stories, and allows LLS to thank community sponsors.
The program culminates with candidates and their guests joining sponsors and other prominent community members at a Grand Finale celebration for the announcement of the Man and the Woman of the Year. The outstanding achievements of all candidates are celebrated at the Grand Finale event, which includes auctions, food, cocktails and music. Following the campaign, the winners are thanked through local and national publicity. Check out the MWOY website (www.mwoy.org) to learn how you can become part of the LLS MWOY family.
